CMYK vs RGB: why print never matches your screen
Your monitor makes colour by emitting light. Paper makes it by absorbing some and bouncing the rest back. Those are different physical processes with different limits, so some colours you can see on screen simply have no ink equivalent.
RGB and CMYK
Screens mix red, green and blue light. Add all three at full strength and you get white. Presses mix cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink. Add those and you get a muddy near-black. The two systems overlap across most of the range, and disagree at the edges.
The colours that disagree most are the ones that glow: electric blues, hot pinks, neon greens, bright oranges. On screen they are lit from behind. On paper they can only reflect the room light that hits them, so they come back a step or two calmer.
This is normal, not a defect
A shift between your screen and the card in your hand is expected, and small variation between print runs is expected too. Uncalibrated monitors make it worse: most consumer screens run bright and cool out of the box, which exaggerates exactly the colours that will not survive.
If exact colour matching matters — you are matching an existing brand palette, or the card sits next to other printed material — the honest approach is to order a small quantity first and look at it under the light where it will be used.
Rich black, and why plain black looks grey
Black ink on its own, at 100% K, covers a large area thinly and reads as dark charcoal rather than true black. For anything bigger than text, printers use a rich black: black ink with cyan, magenta and yellow underneath it.
A few practical habits
- Avoid tiny text in a pale colour on a dark ground. It is the first thing to disappear.
- Give text real contrast against whatever is behind it. A photo background almost always needs a solid panel or scrim under the type.
- If your brand colour is a specific Pantone, expect a CMYK approximation. It will be close, not identical.

- Why does my printed card look different from my screen?
- Screens emit light and use RGB, while printing reflects light and uses CMYK inks. Bright saturated colors sit outside what ink can reproduce, so they print slightly duller. Some shift is normal.
- What is rich black?
- Black ink combined with cyan, magenta and yellow underneath so large dark areas look truly black instead of washed grey. A common recipe is C40 M30 Y30 K100.
